Sexey's U15 girls rugby team travelled to Burnham on Sea today to compete in the South West schools final. The competition consisted of all the schools who qualified through their respective county competitions in Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire. There was a lot at stake with both the winners and the runners up travelling to Twickenham for the finals which are due to be played before the Army v Navy game later this year.

The girls played exceptionally well in the group stages winning their first game against Winterbourne 5 - 0, drawing their 2nd against Penair 2 - 2 before coming up against one of the stronger 2 teams in the group in QE Crediton. This fixture proved to be an incredibly physical affair but thanks to a very early try by India Gill the result remained 1 - 0 until the final whistle. This set up a top of the table, winner takes all, clash with Lakers School from Gloucestershire. Unfortunately despite a top effort the result ended up in a loss by a score of 3 - 0. While the result meant 2nd place in the group and no trip to Twickenham there was a 3rd/4th place play off against Dean Magna School. This too proved to be a step too far and another 3 - 0 loss meant a 4th place finish.

Some hugely impressive skills, especially in defence, were on show and top players on the day were India Gill, Ella Dibble, Raie Craft and Gwen Patch.

The girls rugby program has been a real success at Sexey's with girls who have not previously been involved in team sports now representing the school and we now have players playing in Wells, Castle Cary and North Dorset rugby clubs.

Many thanks to Castle Cary RFC Community Rugby Coach Chris Hurd for his support in running the program this year.
