The pupils learn the many different aspects of both track and field athletics during the school year which culminate in School Sports day on the Friday before half term in the Summer Term.

Successful athletes have for the past few years represented the school at both the district and county competitions and have gone on to greater things elsewhere.

The school is fortunate to have a good 400m grass track and associated pits and field areas, which, set amongst the trees on the Elm Field, with far reaching views to Glastonbury Tor and beyond, is the idyllic place to spend a summers afternoon.

Badminton

Sexey’s has an excellent and deserved reputation for the quality of badminton played at the school and in national competition. The sport is thriving under the watchful eyes of James Elkin our professional coach.Badminton

On Monday evenings we have coached sessions from 4.00pm to 9.00pm with some 120 regular players attending. The sessions range in ability from absolute beginners, including a session to which Primary school age children are welcome, to an elite Somerset County training cell which some of the best players from Somerset and our own County level players attend. In the recent past we have had Sexey’s players ranked in the top 40 nationally and regularly competing on the national circuit. We currently have half a dozen Somerset County team players in various age ranges and amongst them some County champions.

Our School teams have been very successful in league competition and national school competition. Our Key Stage 4 girls were runners up in the South West of England Schools’ championships and are hoping to go all the way to the National finals this year.

On Wednesday afternoons our Sixth formers play badminton, again with a professional coach in attendance, as part of their games entitlement. We also run internal school championships with cups for the best boys and girls.

We have had one off coaching sessions with the likes of Steve Butler, former England number 1 and England mens’ singles coach; Andy Hartley, Yonex national coach; Lee Jae Bok, former Korean number 1 and national coach; Tracy Hallam, Olympic and Commonwealth medalist.

At Sexey’s badminton is recognised by all as a top level sport played to the highest standards.

Cricket is popular throughout the school and practice is held twice a week throughout the winter in the sports hall. One session is a technique based net, the other an indoor game to develop match awareness and both are well attended.

In the summer term teams are run for each age group from Under 12 up to 6th form 1st XI standard who play friendly and cup matches against other schools. The Under 14s and Under 16's also play evening matches in the Mid Wessex League against local club sides and in 2008 the Under 14s won the League championship with a 100% record in games played.

Annual matches with Millfield give the players in the Under 14s and Under 15s a chance to play longer format games and have an afternoon off school!

Practice again takes place on Mondays and other days when fixtures allow with the school playing over 40 competitive fixtures each summer, weather permitting.

Horse riding is organised by Mrs Asbury who takes a party of students, boys and girls, to Pippin Equestrian in Gillingham, an approved riding establishment where they are offered an opportunity of training for, and taking Pony Club tests up to and including 'C' test. The scheme is designed specifically for non-pony owners and enables children with little or no experience to learn the skills of the saddle. The school equestrian teams compete on a regular basis against local independent schools, and occasionally those from further afield, throughout the year.
